Module 1 of 2 · 9 micro‑lessons · ~30 minutes
Organisations have never had more data, dashboards or AI tools — yet prioritisation, diagnosis, trade-offs and execution remain hard. This module explores that gap, and how AI shifts from an information partner to a thinking partner, while human judgement stays decisive.

Organisations have more: data, reports, dashboards, AI tools. Yet they still struggle with: prioritisation, trade-offs, alignment, execution.
"Where does your organisation struggle most — framing the decision, getting reliable evidence, identifying causes, evaluating options, or execution?"

Most organisations are good at producing analysis, but less systematic at converting analysis into decisions.

Data → Analysis → Decision → Outcome
"Organisations compete on decision quality, not information volume." — where does your own team's process stop short of a decision?

AI is already useful as an information partner. It helps answer: "What do I need to know?" AI supports search, summarisation, research, knowledge retrieval, document review and Deep Research.
Open the course notebook (lecture slides, readings, BeautyCo background) and ask:
"Based on the course sources, what information would a decision‑maker need before diagnosing the BeautyCo problem?"
"AI helps us gather and organise information faster." Did the notebook answer strictly from the supplied sources, or did it feel like it was guessing?

Information alone does not answer: what matters most? Which explanation is true? Which option should we choose? What trade-offs are acceptable? What should we do next?
"The gap is not access to information. The gap is decision quality." What's an example from your own work where you had enough information but still struggled to decide?
~5 min · Learn → Try → Use AI → Reflect
AI becomes more valuable when it helps people reason, not just retrieve. "What should we do?" — AI can help generate options, explore explanations, challenge assumptions, evaluate trade-offs, and recommend actions.
Run this in ChatGPT or Gemini: "Generate three different explanations for a business problem you're familiar with — don't let it settle on the first one."
"AI creates higher value when it helps us reason, not just retrieve."
~5 min · Learn → Try → Reflect
AI can generate many ideas, but without structure it often produces generic answers. Without structure, AI may produce: common answers, generic recommendations, popular opinions, overconfident responses, unchallenged assumptions.
Run both prompts below in ChatGPT or Gemini and compare relevance, assumptions, depth and actionability.
"AI needs structure to produce decision-quality thinking."

AI needs context, critique and templates. Power users don't just prompt better — they build habits around evidence and iteration.
| AI Capability | Decision Value |
|---|---|
| Ask better questions | Frame the decision |
| Provide context | Improve relevance |
| Gather evidence | Improve confidence |
| Seek critique | Challenge assumptions |
| Iterate outputs | Improve quality |
| AI Novice | AI Power User |
|---|---|
| Asks simple questions | Gives AI difficult tasks |
| Provides little context | Provides rich context |
| Accepts first answer | Iterates and critiques |
| Uses AI for answers | Uses AI for thinking |
"Better decisions come from better thinking habits." The value difference comes less from the AI tool and more from how people use it.

AI can support decision-making, but humans remain responsible for decisions and outcomes. Humans and AI bring complementary strengths — the "sweet spot" combines them deliberately.
| Human strengths | AI strengths |
|---|---|
| Experience | Pattern recognition |
| Judgment | Scale |
| Ethics | Speed |
| Contextual understanding | Information synthesis |
"AI augments judgment. It does not replace accountability." Which part of the BeautyCo decision should AI support, and which part must remain human‑led?

Decision Intelligence turns AI-assisted information into AI-assisted decision-making — moving from a simple question-answer loop to a full reasoning cycle.
